Four years and 5,000 containers saved from landfill. Now Island Eats is winding down.

After four incredible years, the Island Eats program is coming to a close.

Thanks to your participation and commitment to reuse, we’ve kept over 5,000 single-use takeout containers out of landfills. That’s a powerful impact — and it wouldn’t have been possible without you.

We launched Island Eats with a vision of reducing waste and protecting the beauty of Martha’s Vineyard, and together, we’ve shown that small, everyday choices can make a big difference.

I'm deeply proud of what we accomplished together as a community.

As we wrap things up, please return any outstanding containers and refrain from getting any future meals in our containers. We’ll be visiting all our restaurant partners to make sure everything is collected and ready for its next mission - whatever that may be.

We’re taking some time to reflect on what’s next — how the spirit of Island Eats might continue, and how the containers themselves can keep supporting reuse efforts in our community.

Thank you for being part of this journey. While this chapter is ending, the values at the heart of Island Eats — sustainability, community, and care for the island — live on through each of you.

Why reusables?

95% of plastic is never recycled. And those so-called “biodegradable” and “plant-based” containers? Most are really a combination of plant-produced starch and… plastic. And even “compostable” containers are just regular trash piling up in landfill unless we can ensure they actually make it to a commercial composting facility.

On the island, single use packaging litters our streets, our trails, and our beaches. Sometimes it feels like an unavoidable part of life, a problem too hard to solve. But it isn't. Our reusable bowls are made from 75% recycled stainless steel and can be used 1000’s of times. This means every one of our bowls prevents 1000’s of single-use takeout containers from ending up in the landfill. We think that’s a solution worth sharing.
